How To Practice Mindfulness Daily
In this episode, I explore how to practice mindfulness daily, emphasizing that the goal isn't to become more mindful but to understand ourselves better. I discuss the paradox of effort in Buddhist practice, explaining that it's about being skillful in where we direct our energy, much like the Titanic's crew should have focused on rescue rather than other tasks. Mindfulness, I explain, has two layers: being present and having a non-judgmental awareness of that presence, which helps us change our relationship with our thoughts and emotions. I introduce the concept of the "inner narrator," the voice in our head that's often conditioned by our past, and offer practical exercises from my book, "The Five-Minute Mindfulness Journal," to help you befriend this inner voice and cultivate a better relationship with yourself, which ultimately improves your relationship with the world.
