Why Do I Do This?
In this episode, I explore why I practice and teach Buddhism, focusing on two core ideas: dispelling the illusion of separation between "us" and "them," and understanding that we are the source of our own experiences. I discuss how our social nature leads us to create ingroups and outgroups, but Buddhist teachings, particularly through analytical meditation on the nature of self, reveal our interconnectedness and the illusory nature of these divisions. A key takeaway is that the problem isn't difference itself, but our inability to accept it, and that true understanding, as taught by Thích Nhất Hạnh, leads to love and compassion. The second core idea is that we are the source of our own reality, constructing our heaven or hell through our interpretations, which is incredibly liberating. This understanding empowers us to take control of our reactions, creating space between stimulus and response, and ultimately leading to freedom from habitual reactivity, which is the true path to happiness. This practice helps me become a better person, which in turn makes the world a better place.
