Practicing Acceptance
In this episode, I explore the practice of acceptance, distinguishing it from mere resignation and highlighting its active, empowering nature. I explain that suffering arises not from pain itself, but from our resistance to it, using the example of stubbing my toe to illustrate how our perception and mental formations create suffering beyond the initial physical sensation. Drawing parallels with the OODA loop decision-making model, I propose that practicing acceptance involves the "Observe" and "Orient" stages: actively embracing our subjective experience as it unfolds without judgment. This practice is crucial for skillful responses, preventing habitual reactivity and reducing unnecessary suffering, ultimately leading to greater freedom by how we engage with life's challenges, much like skillfully playing the game of Tetris.
