Naikan meditation is a method of self-reflection that originated in Japan. It is based on the idea of introspection and acknowledging one's interdependence with others. The practice is rooted in gratitude, and it encourages practitioners to appreciate the kindness they have received from others, recognize how they may have caused trouble or pain to others, and understand the troubles they have caused for themselves.

Here's how you can practice Naikan (gratitude) meditation:

  1. Find a quiet and comfortable place: Start by finding a quiet place where you can meditate without interruptions. Get comfortable, either sitting or lying down.
  2. Reflect on a specific relationship: Choose a specific person or a specific period in your life to reflect on. This could be a family member, a friend, or a colleague.
  3. Ask yourself three questions:
    • What have I received from this person?
    • What have I given to this person?
    • What troubles and difficulties have I caused this person?
  4. Reflect on your answers: Spend some time reflecting on your answers. Try to be as honest and thorough as possible. Remember, this is not about judging yourself or feeling guilty, but about gaining a deeper understanding of your relationships and actions.
  5. Express gratitude: After reflecting, take a moment to express gratitude for the kindness and benefits you have received from this person.
  6. Repeat the process: You can repeat this process with different people or different periods in your life.

Naikan meditation can help to cultivate a sense of gratitude and appreciation for others. It can also help to develop a greater understanding of oneself and one's relationships. Over time, this practice can lead to a more empathetic and compassionate outlook on life.
